CCS/MSP-EXP430FR2433: Is it possible to capture UART1 (COM5 in my case) within CCS v8 while debugging ?

Part Number:MSP-EXP430FR2433

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hi,

I just received a couple of these LaunchPad development boards and still learning my limitations and the advantages of these really cool devices and using CCS v8. I found I can capture output from OutOfBox_MSP430FR2433 sample project using PuTTY (COM5) in a separate window and not aware of any other means within CCS. Using PuTTY, if I disconnect, PuTTY is unhappy that the COM port goes away. I am however able to use my scope to decode the TX (P1.4) data.

I have a couple of questions:

1) If I understand the "backchannel UART" term correctly, this means that UART1 shares the same USB connection as the debug interface. Is this a full and correct statement regarding UART backchannel?

2) Is there a way to capture UART1 within CCS v8 in a live debug window? I wasn't sure if CCS v8 has that ability or not. I didn't see anything obvious regarding that. It is getting painful to disconnect the target and having PuTTY's COM port taken away.

Thanks,

John
